What Is Minimum Impact in Big Bear?
Each year, thousands of visitors come to enjoy the fresh mountain air, scenic trails, and peaceful forests of the San Bernardino Mountains. With so many people exploring the area, we all share a responsibility to protect this fragile alpine environment.
Help us preserve Big Bear’s beauty by practicing minimum-impact ethics during your visit — especially while running, hiking, or camping.
Stay on Trail & Tread Lightly
Stick to designated trails and roads — whether you’re on foot, bike, or vehicle.
Avoid cutting switchbacks or creating new paths, even if it seems easier.
Stepping off trail can damage sensitive vegetation, encourage erosion, and disrupt wildlife habitat.
Camp Smart
Camp only in established campgrounds or designated dispersed camping areas.
Set up tents on durable surfaces like dirt, gravel, or pine duff — not on grass or fragile understory plants.
If campfires are allowed, use existing fire rings and bring your own firewood. Cutting or collecting wood is not permitted in most areas.
Never damage trees by breaking branches or stripping bark — these trees provide vital habitat and shade.
Keep It Clean
Pack out all trash, leftover food, and litter — including wrappers, gels, and TP.
Recycle whenever possible.
Use designated restrooms or wag bags; do not bury waste in areas with shallow soil or high use.
Respect Water Sources
Don’t disturb streams, lakes, or springs — they’re critical for local wildlife and clean water supply.
Avoid swimming or washing directly in natural water sources.
Use biodegradable soap away from water (at least 200 feet), and carry water in containers.
Be Wildlife Aware
Observe animals from a distance — don’t feed or approach them.
Keep dogs leashed and under control, especially in wildlife corridors.
Teach kids to be gentle with nature: no chasing, picking up animals, or disturbing nests and burrows.
Your Footprint Matters
Whether you’re here for a single run, a weekend getaway, or a lifetime, your choices make a difference. Let’s work together to keep Big Bear wild, welcoming, and beautiful for future trail runners, hikers, and wildlife.
